Kitchen Island Designs - 3 Unusual Ideas

The kitchen island is a must have feature for your new kitchen or if you are remodeling your old kitchen. Once you decide on including one in your kitchen you have to think about the design. You may not realise it at first, but a kitchen island is not just a rectangular shaped bench top in the middle of your kitchen, it can be much more than that. Here we have three unusual ideas for yours stand out from all the rest.

The main feature of a kitchen island is obviously that it add more workspace into the kitchen area. Instead of being stuck with working with limited workspace, it adds a great space in the centre of the kitchen that allows all to gather around and enjoy the kitchen atmosphere. The first unusual idea is to expand the size of the island. As long as you have the space, design the island so big, that it can actually be used as a dining table. We are not talking just a breakfast bar size, we are talking table size, a size that you can fit six or eight chairs around. If you do that, you have both a kitchen workspace and a dining area right in your kitchen.

The second unusual idea is to make better use of the space under the bench tops. The most common use of the space under the bench tops is to just fill it up with shelves and drawers. There is more that you can do though to make an unusual design. Look at how you could use the ends of the kitchen island. Some unusual ideas are to build in a wine rack to hold your wine and bottle collection. How about a magazine or cookbook rack, to hold all of your recipes, so that they are easily in reach.

The last unusual idea is to make it portable. A kitchen island on wheels. Something that can be wheeled into position when you need it and put away when you do not. If you do not have space for a traditional kitchen island, then a trolley or table on wheels can serve the same purpose.
